Default manual boost controller

My friend just did a manual boost controller on his brothers nissan. He just got like a 2 way valve with a twisty screw thing on top to controll size of passage. (i think this has a name) and just connected each part of the vaccum line to it. He got a sizeable increase also. Is there anything wrong with this on our cars? I would like to do this soon. Any input is great

Default Not a good idea. A chip will yield much better results...

Several people have tried MBC's and run into problems. A MBC just doesn't take into account all the tuning parameters (such as timing and air/fuel ratio) so the results will not be as good as with an ECU modification.

Also, there are safety measures taken in the stock programming to prevent over-spinning the turbo. With an MBC, if you turn the boost up too far, the ECU will think something is wrong (overboosting) and send the car into limp mode...and that's no fun.

Just my $.02, but I think you'd be much better of with any chip on the market...

Default yep, plus our cars have much more computer engineering put into them then some other cars

the ECU's dont let you do much in our car without throwing a CEL, pretty much chipping the car will optimize the tuning of the whole car, not just one aspect of it, id avoid the MBC...

On DSM's and others, you can just play around with whatever, but in the audis, you screw with one thing, itll throw everything else off, i agree with shaun for the chipping...

Default You can't use a regular MBC, but I seem to recall European Car writing up an electronic one that

fools the ECU into thinking it's providing less boost than it is, so it gives you more than stock, but without the car ever knowing it. It provided decent increases, and was adjustable in-car. Try looking around to see if European Car's write-up is on the web.

Up to and under 1bar of boost pressure is ok, but expect to get what you paid for for a mbc

Default MBC will work, and give pretty good results for the $$. (m)

I used one for about 8-10 months with out any problems, well almost no problems. I had the boost set at about 13psi, but early in the morning (when it was alot cooler) I would get more boost (go figure). Watching the boost gauge it would spike at about 15psi really quick and go into limp mode. I wouldn't be able to get rid of this until I turned off the ignition, but as soon as boost went over 1bar - limp mode again. (old ECUs will reset i am told) The computer will keep your engine pretty safe, although don't put 100% faith in your knock sensor! If you gotta have results now, sure get one, but upgrade to chip.

Default I have had a lot of experience with MBC and the 20V motor, & unless the load levels in the ECU..

are turned up by the software tuner, you will have done nothing but wasted time and money as you will hit limp mode the mintue you try and increase boost. The only benefit a MBC will have for you is that you now would be able to turn the boost down from where it's set either stock or chip level's.
