Need CV boot help.
Still have my 2002 A4 Quattro 3.0 with 170,000 miles on it now.
However, I'm in desperate need of help. Found both inner CV boots split while doing an oil change.
Have gotten the passenger halfshaft out and cannot see a way to get the cup off the inner tripod. The end that bolts to the transmission looks welded and it won't pull apart the other way.
Fortunately I think I found the problem in time because I feel no excess slop, binding or grinding in the joint. I should be able to get away with just boots.
Did a search and saw someone had mentioned that the outer CV has to come off and the inner boot goes on that way. Is that so?
If the design really is that lame I might as well order and replace the outer boots while I'm at it.
Nope. See attached. It's staked.
Guess I'm really lucky the joint seems to have survived its ordeal. No binding or grinding throughout its range of motion. Seems the only option would be to replace the shaft otherwise.
I ordered outer boots and axle bolts yesterday from Blau and they should be here tomorrow.
I was going to buy a slide hammer at Harbor Freight but I've read elsewhere you can just thread the axle bolt back in to pop the outer CV off. Going to give that a try before I spend any more money. I have already bought impact rated hex drivers for the axle bolt so I can use that on a impact gun to really apply some oomph.
