add 1" for 3.0 car. I think there is a definate problem of when to changeover if you are going directly from summers to snows. The same people who don't wanna "compromise" and get a/s tires are compromising their own performance during the inbetween times. I certianly did not need snows to drive in the cold shushy rain tonite, but summers would have been hard, slippery and had incorrect tread pattern. My all-seasons were PERFECT, I went from dry high-speed runs to dodging wrecks in the sleet. If you put snows on for the whole season and there are only a few flakes, they are worn out fast and handle crappy. I'll state my opinion (again) that 2 sets of a/s tires work great and are economical. My worn set will go back on in May as "smokers" and the new set I am buying in a month will be kept pristine for a second and third winter! Face it, snows are useless after 1/2 tread, at least I can use old a/s for summertime until the belts show. If you have summers now, buy the same size all-season rims and tires and they will last multiple winters and become smokers later. Maybe I am biased because I drive 30k a year but I won't over-spend on treads that I won't get total use out of. Isn't most snow driving plowed conditions to a dry highway anyway? I have no agenda here, but good advice for quattro owners: quattro + fresh all-seasons = good performance on plowed snow, especially with esp!

Default why not just a set of summers and good snow sport tires like the Dunlop M2?

Here in CO, we get 70 degree days in January followed by a blizzard that drops 2' of snow. I don't need to be changing out my wheels every weekend.

Then get good A/S's for the winter instead of snows.

Default It's not??? You made my point for me, it takes 3 custom sets or 2 a/s, which is more economical?

Especially considering how long you can use the 2 sets of all-seasons. I should have projected the miles/cost. There are a lot of opinions out there, but mostly everybody thinks "extreme" summer and snows only, but there is a gap when a/s IS best and my opinion is at least unique, I think effective too!

Default 15" snows are DIGGERS! Seriously, for the "average" AWer who never had 2 sets, this is good advice.

Some people (here) never bought a second set of rims and if they are concerned about the cost/effectiveness of a set of snows that will wilt on the car waiting for deep snow and get thrown out after 1/2 tread *verses* a second set of all-seasons that WILL get used for 30,000+ miles eventually.
