I just bought a 2002 a4 1.8T (250,000 KM) and didn't check the reverse...

After taking it out of the lot and trying to reverse, when I push the pedal it just whistles and moves back slowly like I'm revving in neutral.

When i push the pedal very slowly I can reverse with power and depressing the pedal very slowly allows me to reverse faster almost like normal.

I've read that this could be a transmission problem and was wondering how much estimated cost of fixing would be? (asia,usa,europe)

I had one a4 come in doing this. I changed the transmission fluid and filter and drove the car and it surprisingly reverse came back and the car still is working and that was a year ago. So if that does not fix it, then the transmission is junk and needs replaced. On the next trans change the fluid every 30- 40k miles it will last forever.

Prospeeder, I know I have opinions on which fluid and filter. Any comments there?

Just a cheap meyle kit for the filter and 6 quarts of Valvoline Maxlife ATF is all I use.

You need a transmission rebuild.
