Default operating temp

i have an 02 audi a4 with 1.8t and i have a scan gaugeii plugged into my car and it fluctuate anywhere from 204-209 degrees Fahrenheit. i was wondering what temp i should be running at normally and if this is to high is this a thermostat issue?

What is your temp gauge reading. Just above half? Or is that why your are reading the temps directly?

That's pretty normal for the 1.8T mapped cooling system. In fact, you will probably see even higher temperatures when steady state driving. Once you put the engine under load you will see a drop in temperature as the ECM applies power to the thermostat heater. I see mine drop all the way down to 180° on a two mile upgrade on the interstate that I drive regularly.

Also, the temperature display in the dash isn't a linear instrument. You will notice that it hits the 12:00 position around 175° and it doesn't move to the right until somewhere around 230°

so you dont think i need to replace my thermostat or temp sensor?

Nope. Your temperature range is perfectly normal.
