Q: Do our seats have occupant sensors for airbag deployment? (side or front)

nexlvl, Dean@Evil U. 02-19-2004 03:28 PM

I beleive so. Can't say 100% tho

NerdKonvention 02-19-2004 03:37 PM

Both mine (front) went off and I was the only one in the car.

ILMA_Revo_Stage_2+ 02-19-2004 03:47 PM

you mean the front driver and passenger airbags? ....

Avant XP 02-19-2004 04:47 PM

I don't believe so

ILMA_Revo_Stage_2+ 02-19-2004 04:58 PM

that's what i thought.... i was a bit curious that's all.

I have a follow-up question...heated seat sensors

I had a loaner A6 ('99) for several days, & I was looking at the manual to confirm that its steering wheel was heated. (the coolest thing about that car, in my opinion, I'd pay for that option!) The wheel is heated when the seat heater is on.

The manual said the rear seats had a weight sensor & so would only activate when a body was on the seat. I wondered, what about the fronts? It didn't say. Then I wondered, what about the heated rear and/or front seats in my '02 A4 (ahh back in the day when you could get heated seats in an A4, the trade-off for having failing coil packs!) I get picky about making sure the 3 passenger heater wheels are set to the 0-position when no one's in my car. My girlfriend would think I was weird, but I had a Jetta before where 1 of the seat heaters died & I don't want to have to deal with that repair again & the way my Audi service people might mess up my seat like the VW mechanic did!

To recap after that longwinded mess - who knows if A4 seat heaters (passenger, rear seats) have weight sensors?

ILMA_Revo_Stage_2+ 02-19-2004 06:05 PM

i don't think there are any... i got a ride on an A4 to the dealer once

the dial in the rear was set to mid-level before i got in and it was warm...

what would really be cool are massage and heated seats :-D the benz has this as an option i think.

KR's A4 02-19-2004 06:10 PM

ahh but benz doesn't have heated steering wheel. my dad misses that in his e500 vs. his old a6/a8

ILMA_Revo_Stage_2+ 02-19-2004 06:20 PM

i think its a bit of a hazard to have the wheels heated if you ask me

KR's A4 02-19-2004 06:23 PM

? Not like it burns your hands off the wheel. Tho it lulled me to sleep & made me want to wiz...

Avant XP 02-19-2004 06:38 PM

There is a weight sensor or something like that in each seat; the OFRM shows it

ILMA_Revo_Stage_2+ 02-19-2004 06:42 PM

that;s what i am afraid of... esp. when you start off for work early in the morning

NerdKonvention 02-19-2004 08:34 PM

Yes

Check my picture post....I was the only occupant and my bag didn't go off but the pass side did

RASTA4 02-19-2004 09:44 PM

I thought heated seat sensors are only in the rear.

Jimax 02-19-2004 10:27 PM

I believe the deployment of the airbags are tied to the use of the seat belt

As RafRaf said, he was the only occupant and his airbag did not deploy. My assumption is that he was wearing his seatbelt. I believe that the car assesses the severity of impact and if it knows the seat belt is buckled, it factors in the effectivness of that before it decides to deploy the airbag or not.

Where seatbelts are not fastened, it has no clue, so the car errs on the side of caution and deploys the airbag.

ILMA_Revo_Stage_2+ 02-20-2004 05:25 AM

cars are so smart now! :) I always buckle up...

nexlvl, Dean@Evil U. 02-20-2004 06:37 AM

Yeah, that's exactly it!

I know I'd read something about the B6 "knowing" if it should or should not deploy the airbags durring a collision. And know I remeber that, among about a million other inputs, one of the main inputs is a seatbelt useage sensor. Also coming into play are sensors detecting where the car has been hit as well as how hard and (believe it or not) whether or not the doors are locked.

Avant XP 02-20-2004 06:38 AM

Actually, that's in the manual, but I don't have it in front of me right now

Jimax 02-20-2004 08:43 AM

Apparently, I RTFM :)

ILMA_Revo_Stage_2+ 02-20-2004 08:46 AM

Jim, have you seen the new 04 manuals? they are more 'colorful' with the english more clear

Jimax 02-20-2004 08:49 AM

Really? Because my 03 manual was littered with grammar mistakes and misprints

glad they finally got an editor to put out a good manual.
