Default Question about Tail Lights... overriding the "LIGHTS OUT" message

i want to mod the red part of the rear taillights. There are two bulbs in the back of each light. (not including the reverse and turning) The outer red lights illuminate when the brake is applied. The inner lights illuminate when the headlights are on, slightly less strong.. but they are ugly. How can i remove the inner lights, or not have them light up without the "REAR LIGHT OUT" message appearing/ im trying to figure out how to override the system.

Default My guess is...

the car is probably monitoring the amperage drawn by the bulbs on the circuit. To aviod the "light out" warning, you could find the resistance of the bulb, and then short the hot lead to ground through a resistor of a comparable value to that of the light bulb. If I understand correctly, by doing this, you'll have no rear lights at night (save the brake lights)? That doesn't seem very safe/legal. JAT

Default He'll just ride with his fog on all the time instead. ;-) --m--

I agree with nexlevel, removing that bulb would be illegal in terms of brightness, and probably not wise from a safety standpoint. Why bother? you don't even see the tail lights when you operate the car, and those of us following really don't care.

Bad scenario:
1) Guy behind you not wearing his glasses like he should be.
2) He's changing radio stations and looking down.
3) You coast down in speed, not using your brakes.
4) It's at night.
5) He hits you from behind because your lights weren't bright enough to catch his attention.
6) Your car is in the shop for three weeks.

Default He'll still have lights, but...

What he wants to do is disable the inboard light that functions as tail-light only. The outboard light functions as a tail-light and a brake light. I certainly don't understand why he thinks that two tail-lights on each side is ugly and one tail-light on each side is not. I personally think it looks great just as it is.
