with a recent increased interest in upgrading headlamp bulbs, it is important that people are aware what they are doing, and what they are getting for their money. I'm not talking about road-legal matters, just the technical aspect.

Nothing will come at no cost, so it's better to understand the underpinning, and the extent of trade-offs before changing your bulbs. I found the following very useful about superwhites:

By the way, I have halogen (non-xenon) headlamps. I have changed both low, and high beams. I did it purely for the looks, but I was aware what I was trading off and considering my lighting needs, I could safely afford the trade-off.
