Rear brakes DIY tip....
It was a beautifull day in Chicago so I did some work on the A4. Changed rear pads and rotors and bled the brake fluid with some fresh ATE Super Blue. Put on summer wheels too.
Anyways...not sure if its been covered but rear rotors come off without removing the carrier. I wish I new right away before messing with that lower carrier bolt. I didn't take it off on driver's side. It was easy job then. While bleeding, I noticed my front inner pads are way more worn down than the outer ones - is this common? The front caliper guides design is also new to me. I'll have to replace those this week as I'll be hitting track this coming weekend....and since Coupe is not done A4 will do. Pic of summer wheels, for now. <img src="http://pictureposter.audiworld.com/37962/dsc00796.jpg"> |
pads on the same side as the piston always wear more than those opposite it
Um, no.
on the B6 A4 they sure do, why do you disagree?
so how did that rotor come off
pad wear is accelerated by deposits/grooves on the rotor
all things being equal both sides should wear the same unless the glide pin is bad. floating caliper will push/pull with the same force
2nd, Ive always read that removing carriers was necessary.
Exactly, floating rotor - not sure if this new design is the cause...
I haven't really taken off my caliper but I didn't see a "standard" carrier with guide pins + caliper there. I'll know more later this week.
You just take it off the hub....
Pull the the end that's away from the carrier, have the rotor clear the hub and pull out - you will know when there.
Right after I hung up with you....
it came off. The other side, I didn't even have to torch it, just pounded it few times and it popped out....I then realized I could try and pull it off without removing the carrier, and it worked.
