Default Stranded ... again ...

Cruising at 80 mph ... engine quitely quits. Flat-bedded to Community Auto in GR, MI (I was 30 miles east of GR).

2002 1.8TQMS w/ 116k miles.
Replaced to date (warranty): coils, oil pump, turbo, cat, cup-holder.
Replaced to date (non-warranty): water pump/timing belt/valves, fuel filter.

No CEL.
Engine turns-over, but doesn't start.
Battery is fine.

Preliminary investigation by CA suggests fuel pump. I was getting a droning sound from the fuel filter area. The sound was more noticable when I turned on either the zenons or the rear defroster.

I'll get results later today.

Default Could be, but I haven't heard any "my alternator failed" B6 stories.

Alternators don't usually fail (even on German cars) unless he is running an exuberant sound system that puts extra strain on the alternator.

Considering that basically else was changed except the fuel pump, that's what it probably is.

From what I read on the B6 forum, the life limit of the oem fuel pump seems to be about 30-50K. Since I was stranded already in August (fuel pump-replaced under warranty), I'm planning to change the fuel pump again in about 3 years.

That is my worst nightmare. I've set aside some money for this repair also.

ha... an alternator wont "spin faster" when you turn on more electronic devices...

Also he said that the sound comes from the fuel filter area (rear) and alternator is at the front :P

Default My car died like that (see thread below), but is mysteriously fine now

Dealer says their hands are tied and can't replace the fuel pump since the car is not exhibiting any symptoms now... I see their point as pumps just usually work or don't and really don't go intermittent and they can't just start throwing parts at a problem they can't diagnose... I'll be calling AOA tomorrow to see what options I have... any advice?

Anyhow, good luck with yours and keep us posted.

Default Fuel Pump and Relay ... not alternator

I guess I was trying to convince myself that it was something I knew it wasn't. I realized after my original post that the alt. probably was o.k. because the battery was o.k. I just didn't want to think that it was the fuel pump. I'm going to have them check the performance of the alt. any way. I just replaced the fuel filter a month ago hoping that it was the limit of my sound-from-the-rear-of-the-car-woes so this evening the fuel should flow freely.

Since new I've had alot of work done under warranty. Since my Audi Cert. Warranty expired @ 100k I've spent near $4k on this vehicle - none of it upgrades! I feel like I have a rotting lemon.

A4 n00b - good luck with AoA - I've had nothing but disappointing experiences with AoA.
