turbo or atmospheric
I wonder what you guys think of the two types of engines, atmospheric and turbo : supposedly, if you had two cars with the same horsepower, but one with turbo and the other with atmospheric engine, which one would you choose?
Why?
i'd be glad to hear your precious opinions.
thanks a lot...

Most likely turbo but
Well it goes like this if the turbo and the NA motor could not be tuned further I would proably pick the NA motor b/c of its smoother torque curve. However if for ex the A4 had a choice of a 170 hp turbo or NA motor I would choose the tubo for its easy tunability and easy upgradeability to larger lurbos, intercoolers etc. Plus Turbos just feel sportier to drive and right now that is what I like.

It would depend upon the torque and HP curves...
They both have to perform down low, as well as up top. You loose a lot of opportunity to modify without the turbo. If you were not interested in modifying the motor, the non-turbo would be your best bet, if the "Power" were infact equal.

Whoa, turbo for sure....
It's all about the ability to upgrade. There is no easier platform to get more power from than one that is turbo from the factory. Most of the time they are overbuilt for longevity and can take some extra boost easily. For about $4000 I can double my stock power (or almost) on a 1.8T. See how much you get from the 3.0 with that cash (staying N/A of course...no cheating allowed!).

one example: Bmw 320 E46 vs A4 1.8T
320 and 1.8T have the same Hp however; if we compare the torques, the 320 trails by 20 N/m
a4 - 210
320 190
has anyone had the chance to compare these two cars?

Non-turbo, unless I lived in the mountains
Turbo's only advantage if the power and torque are the same would be no loss of power at high elevations and possibly a bit better fuel economy because the engine size would likely be smaller.
Turbo disadvantages are many: don't like heat; more expensive, complex hardware; have to be more careful with maintenance; noise...
That's a Canadian perspective. If I had to pay Euro gas prices, I'd likely think a TDI was a great choice!

I love the way the turbos climb those twisty mountain roads (elevation being a non-factor).
Then again, I live at around 6,000 feet. In the past when I've had naturally aspirated cars, I enjoyed them most when I'd drive out to California or Massachusetts. They always seemed almost like hot rods down there at sea level.
