ashtray won't open all the way, stfa for ashtray removal but is that even necessary?

ashtray won't open all the way, stfa for ashtray removal but is that even necessary?
what is exactly wrong with the ash tray that cause it to only open 1/2 way and wiggle around.

is this on the 03?
if so, start by pulling the center trim piece around the shift/auto boot out and take a peak underneath...there should be 2 small bolts holding down tabs for the ashtray. if one is missing, its possible that the tray moves around...it is quite possibly the biggest PITA to get that thing in there right without removing the HVAC control...but it can be done. take a look at that and let me know.
do you keep change in it? cards or otherwise? change slides back all the time and causes it to jam...another possible source of the problem.
