Default whining noise coming from rear part of the car, in between the rear wheels

I have an Audi A4, 1.8T, 2002. For the last year or so I 've been hearing a high pitched, whining kind of noise coming from the rear part of the car. I pinpointed the noise from somewhere in between the rear two wheels.
The noise has been there for quit some time, but it would come and go.
Now it has become more consistent and it's there almost all of the time.

Any ideas what this problem might be, and what it will take to have t0 fixed?

thanks a lot in advance,
nick

I have that same noise...finally traced it to my 6 year old daughter. I replaced the AA batteries in her cd player and the noise went away.

Sorry, I couldn't resist that.

Possibly a lubrication issue or ujoint on the rear axle?

Fuel pump is going. Very common issue...there is probably a recall out for yours if you do a search.
I would fix it ASAP.

its easy, i just did mine a couple weeks ago. fuel filter is about 50 bucks, here is a DIY
http://www.audizine.com/forum/showthread.php?t=224783

couple suggestions: wear goggles, gotta gotta gotta wear goggles. i didnt get any fuel in my eyes, but even with the gas cap off there was still pressure and it sprayed a little.

the lines on the engine side of the fuel filter are easy to get off, at the end of the connector there are squeezable points on both sides of the line. i would push the line a little toward the filter and then squeeze the connector and give it a good tug.

the lines on the trunk side can be a ROYAL bitch to get off (mine were). you gotta push the lines toward the filter and really squeeze in on the tabs on the side, then pull. you can try rotating the lines a little to get any crud out from there. whatever you do, do NOT use a flathead and start prying around on the tabs. the tabs can be pulled out, but that actually locks on the connector onto the filter, you need to push them in. audi plastic is crap, i have heard stories of people prying around with a flathead and breaking the connectors, they arent cheap.

it took me about an hour and half, but my lines were pretty hard to get off. i could do it in half that time now that i have done it once. definitely not worth taking to a shop or the stealership and paying $150 or whatever they would charge to do it.

Wouldn't you want to pull hte fuse for the fuel pump and run the motor till it dies? That's how it use to be done back in the early days of electronic fuel injection (like throttle body injection)...not sure if this is not recommended because of potential to damamge anything.

How often should the filter be replaced? I'm at 70k and have put the last 30k on myself...I know its never been changed since I bought it. I have to do plugs soon anyway, might as well get it all over and done wiht.

I haven't heard of that nor did that when I replaced my fuel filter. I heard that loud whine noise one morning a couple of years ago and immediately changed the filter. No noise with the new filter.

I would do it every 50k as part of maintenance and piece of mind. I'm on my third one, currently at 116k miles.

Default just replace the fuel filter

and the noise is gone! I was debating if I should it myself or not. I ended up paying 150 bucks to the mechanic for a 10 minute job. Now I feel like a sucker Anyways, thanks to all your very helpful comments.
