Electric motors draw more current as the age and especially when they are reaching failure point.

Default One cause is the linkage transmission is stiff with dry bushings, ...

the motor pulls excessive amps working against the additional friction in the wiper linkage. Make sure the wiper linkage moves freely without binding. The motor will eventually be damaged if forced to run overloaded, with the motor's torque capability effected, the current draw increases further, unless the excessive load from linkage binding is corrected asap, motor burn out is certain.
