The best I could do in New Hampshire was $1,000 over invoice, but I'm very limited in my choice of dealers. I've heard of some $500 over deals, but I think $750-1,000 over has been more typical. $1200 seems a bit on the high side, but it's certainly not unreasonable.

A few hundred dollar difference for a $35-40K car is pretty nominal and should hardly effect your monthly cost. Just make sure you get what you want and don't settle.
