UK: A4 2.0 TDI oil pressure light - balance shaft failure?
Hi,
Few days ago when I was on motorway oil pressure light came on and I felt loss of power so I pulled off. My 2.0 TDI has BRE engine. It is the 140PS version. Yesterday my mechanic called saying that I have a balance shaft failure. It is very frustrating as I've always looked after my car and it's been well maintained. Isn't it an engineering problem? Where is the German engineering here?
Now having my engine stripped I need to get a quick solution.
Do I need to change balance shaft only or I need to get this hex keyway only?
All Audi A4 2.0 TDI suffer from this balance shaft failure? I read online that others paid £2900 to fix this problem at Audi dealership. My car isn't worth fixing if I go to Audi. If I had known that this balance shaft failure is a common problem with these 2.0 TDI engines then I would have bought a petrol model.

time a go the cars manufacturers build and test the engines for years before trowing on the market, now, they build it quickly and test it at costumers expense
you can exchange your used balance shaft for reconditioned one for around 200 pounds with 100 mm hex key, better than 77 mm old version one
also check some bearings and the turbocharger

balance shaft fixed
Hi Daniel,
Yes I 100% agree. It works just like with Microsoft products. They throw their product on the market and after you have to download patches instead of testing them beforehand.
Meantime we had to resolve the problem and we bought an aftermarket balance shaft for my A4. My mechanic said he had bad experience with KMB and since they sell their reconditioned balance shaft more expensive than Zedperformance we ordered it here:
https://shop.zedperformance.co.uk/pa...-balance-shaft
I asked around and I know someone who has a Passat 2.0 TDI with BMR engine also ordered from them a year ago. He also confirmed it is all good.
Although I can't see what material they used but it seemed a well made replacement part. Knock on wood so far no problems with it. It came with chrome-vanadium 100mm hexagon key.
