A4 2.0T Tractor Sound
I just bought a used 2008 2.0T A4. It sounds like a John Deer tractor at low RPM's coming from the engine. I'm wondering if I might have somekind of exhaust leak near the manifold. Is this sound common? Does anyone know what causes that? Is there a way to make it sound more like a sports car/BMW?
Thanks

Its common with these ULEV engines, especially our direct fuel injection variety.
Sometimes its the cam tensioner, but with 24k on the clock, I highly doubt it.
I test drove several A4 2008s and they all sound like a diesel and vibrate slightly at idle...as soon as you touch the gas everything smooths out.
Some that have aftermarket chips have raised their idle RPM to 1000 or 1100 which also "fixes" the "problem"....but its not a problem, and perfectly normal.

Of course, the '02 has a Milltec exhaust, so engine sounds are not very noticeable. I'd love to hang a Milltec on the '08, but I am hoping to stop the mod madness for a while.
To further confuse you, the '11 Q5 2.0T we bought for my honey to drive does not make that noise! Go figure...

The 2.0T FSI was used in the B7 A4, the B8 A4/Q5 etc use the newer 2.0 TFSI engine, it is still a 2.0 turbo, but it now makes more power, uses a timing chain instead of timing belt, has a cam roller instead of a cam follower, is much quieter than the 2.0T FSI, I am sure there are other differences, but I don't know them all. I have driven a B8 and a Q5 with the newer engine and it is much smoother than the 2.0T FSI in my A4.
