Default AC in B7

Seeing some critical comments, here's my 2¢.
I love the new Econ. button on the AC. I thought it would do what my Corolla GTS did 20 years ago - maintain the set tempreture and automatically shut off and on the compressor. Not really! Perhaps it will take the German scientists another generatin or two of A4s.

Default That's what the AUTO buttons are for.

Econ is more akin to VENT, IIRC.

Default Re: That's what the AUTO buttons are for.

Are you saying that the Auto actually shuts off the compressor?

Default Well, kinda.

mainly it runs it at a lower power. It's not an "on/off" switch, it's more like your brake pedal (since many people know only one gas pedal setting =)). It's called variable drag clutch or something like it. Takes just as much power as it needs.

This gives you constant air quality (low humidity) without the need for the compressor spinning on full all the time.

Default Can I make my B7's AC any colder?

On 100+ degree days in the past week, I had my AC on and it really wasn't as cold as my previous car when I had just recharged it with R134A refridgerant. I'm wondering if from the dealership, brand new, if the A4 isn't charged enough or there's something else about Audi's AC setup that doesn't cause it to blow ice cold.

I don't use the auto settings, only leave it on manual and keep the temps on LOW. Even when I use the recirc button, it doesn't make it any colder. Has this been an issue at all or has anybody else experience this?

Default Mine works like yours

It was borderline when it was 100 degrees, but fine for anything less.

Default I find american cars to have the coldest AC

NOt sure why Audi isn't icy cold, but I'm with you, I'll don't use the auto setting and use the recirc button to try and cool down quicker and leave the temp around 18-19C.

Default Got that right ... my '68 Buick Regal could've cooled my house!

... Whereas my 1980 Mazda RX-7 had the worst A/C I've ever experienced in a car. My '02 A4's A/C is good but not great.

Default Even though it's a new car...

have the dealer check the A/C to make sure that it is in fact working properly. I've delivered cars that the A/C needed to be re-charged.

Default We've had too many 100+ days in Texas this summer and the A/C has been great.

I think it actually works better (i.e. cools more) than my B6. The one thing I noticed that's definitely different concerns a common complaint on the B6 A/C. In the mornings, when it's humid, the AUTO setting on the A/C would channel air to the windshield and cause fogging on the outside. On my B7, in the AUTO setting, no air goes to the windshield in the mornings. Definite improvement.
