Any cons on chipping?
#2
my (probably lame) opinion...
Tuning the car for higher performance won't necessarily decrease the life of it. I could chip my car today, drive it very conservatively and enjoy it for 10 or 20 years. But generally when you have it, you put your foot in it. So is it the chip or is it because the performance of the car makes it fun to do WOT launches at every on-ramp?
I did chip my B6 and it wasn't a huge upgrade (Revo), and I didn't drive it much differently. But on track days it was at 4-5000 RPMs for a few total hours. More stress on the car? Yes. Did I care? Not a bit. That's what I bought it for, along with getting me to work.
Will I chip my B7? Yes, as soon as spring comes. Not much point with winter on the way. My opinion is that VW/Audi makes an engine that isn't on the edge as far as capability. I don't believe that tuning for 15% or 18% more HP and torque will matter much, but I do expect to put wear on the car faster, and that cost is acceptable to me. And let's face it, there is a chance for a catastrophic failure, that when claimed under warranty, may be denied because of my ECU modification. I accept that risk as well, although I consider it to be a remote chance.
Good luck and welcome to the forum. Lots of people here have way more practical experience.

Why didn't Audi make the car to its full potential then?!
I just find it ridiculous for such a small increase in hp and torque, why doesn't audi just start off the car tuned to its max.
I own a BMW E46 M3, and there isn't much engine mods that can be done to the car since BMW has already tuned the car to its max "almost" The only thing left is to supercharge it.

Well...
That's a great example. The M3 is the "tuned" version. If I recall, it costs more than a 330ci... :-)
The S4 is Audi's "tuned" version (granted, it's a V8), and there are dealers that sell an after-market "tuned" A4 (B6 with the 1.8T, no B7 2.0T yet), that, with all kinds of upgrades, sells for as much as an S4.
But the answer to your question is, I believe, a combination of marketing (selling V6s is more lucrative), drivability and longevity.
