Just wondering if it can be done, I suppose you can just get a spare ECU when you take it in for service too.

i'm leased and flashed from APR .. actually i just switch it to "stock" they never looked at my ECU at my last oil and they have no reason too and won't. Also, if your leased, i would suggest Vag-com for any fault codes that could show you're "playing" with things in the car like MAF codes and what not.
PS i'm over 11k miles since mid july! and beating on the car and tracked and wow she holds up great

I had that kind of setup with my B5 S4 - 2 ECUs
One was a stock ecu and the other was socketed so I could swap out the different chips - 91 octane, 100 octane.
It's much easier now that you can just switch the programs through the cruise control stalk!
Besides, they have made the ECU a lot harder to get to now, plus there are special screws holding it in that you would have to replace each time you removed it.

It's a way to go...
I mean responding with "That's the most ridiculous..."

Hey nemesisa6, without the techno, the ECU is accessable via a port under the dash, and has capability to store multiple programs. So "chip" can mean "chip", i.e., literally a chip in the ECU that's been flashed and soldered on, or it can mean a software load via that port into flash memory in the ECU. Companies make software with different capabilities than stock, like one for 91 octane, 93 octane, 100 octane, and maybe others like a stock profile, valet mode, security lockout, and so on.
But it seems like not many people send in the ECU and have the chip cut off, flashed and resoldered. The more popular and modern way is to buy software and have it loaded at a shop that sells it. I may be totally wrong; others may weigh in about that.
I bought software for my B6 and it was great. I'm going to get something for my B7 too, but I've been waiting until all the major developers get their products finished for the 2.0T. A few have products out at this point, though still fairly new.
Welcome to the board, although I'm kinda' new myself.
