Default Is auto better with 3.2 than 2.0T?

The auto transmission in the 2.0T is by far the worst I have driven in the last several years. It is always one gear too high and it makes the car boring to drive.

S mode is no better. It holds some gears too long and if you do not stop completely at a corner, it will downshift from second to first at the very moment where you accelerate.

Manual mode is a bit better but I still do not like it much.

How does it match the 3.2? Is it as bad as with the 2.0T?

I had a 2.0T CVT for about 3 weeks. Couldn't stand it. The torque of the 3.2 that i'm driving now is much better suited to the CVT. I would only recommend the 2.0T in 6MT or quattro. On the plus side, I did get phenomenal fuel mileage with the 2.0T CVT. Commuting on So Cal freeways got 36 mpg.

Default A tough call.

The auto with the 3.2 may have slightly less lag because there is no turbo, but you will still have some hesitation. This is inherant in Audi's current crop of automatics. I have driven all versions and my conclusion is the 2.0T CVT has the fastest response to the accelerator pedal. Of course getting a manual would eliminate all this and save you some $, but I can't imagine being stuck in (L.A.) traffic every morning and night without an automatic. Your call. One last bit... the 3.2 FWD is going to have a very hard time getting full power to the front wheels. Power will be cut to keep the wheels from spinning, so I'd estimate you'd only see the benefits of the V6 power on the highway at speed. Good luck with your choice.

Default I am very please with my 3.2 and auto

One of the reasons I choose the 3.2 was to avoid the lag with the automatic tranny. The 3.2 is very snappy and cannot wait to leap at the traffic lights. The shift 1 to 2 occurs very fast unless you are in "S" mode. Overall I'm very pleased with the performance and response.
The lag with the 2.0 and automatic just wasn't my cup of tea.
So try one and see if it works for you.

Default you don't feel like its searching for gears when you transition from braking to accelerating?

What about the 1-2-3 shifts...I find them annoying as hell. It shifts too soon and too rough. It can be lived with, but once you drive a car equipped with a better automatic tranny, the shortcomings of Audi's version become obvious. I almost with it has 5 gears instead of 6, where 1/2/3 would be replaced by 1/2.

Default Actually I had some response lag in my '97 A8 4.2 AT...

I'm pretty sure it's a quattro differential thing...

My opinion is that auto transmissions and small displacement turbo engines don't go together well.

Default Re: Is auto better with 3.2 than 2.0T?

other than living in an extremely congested area traffic wise or being a left leg amputee, why on earth would anyone buy an automatic in a car like this...autos are for commuters, not DRIVERS, which I thought we all were. Not to mention it costs thousands extra.
