Braking suggestions...
 

Folks, my brake pad warning light just came on today (presumably the front pads). I have 40K on the car, so not unexpected. While I'm changing the pads (mintex red box probably), any suggestions as to what else to replace? Crossdrilled rotors? Stainless steel brake lines? I'm a little too cheap to go ahead and buy a 'Big Brake' kit for a couple of grand, but I do intend to give the car a little more get up and go in the future (I'm running APR 91 at the moment). Thanks for any suggestions.

S4 Carriers/rotors, aftermarket pads, ss lines, new fluid.
 

I'd suggest Castrol SRF for the fluid... that stuff rocks. I have many friends in racing and they swear by the stuff so much so they run it in their street cars. But it's $70 a liter. lol.

Anything you do will be bling. Spend your money on something else.
 

Unless you take a B7 to the track, the stock brakes are fine. They are probably fine on a track also if you use the right pad compound, but as I don't have B7 track experience I won't say for sure.

The point being -- its a 3600 lb car with 320mm front discs. That's a lot of brake, and one of the key improvements over the earlier B6 1.8T.

Keeping the system propertly maintained (fresh high quality fluid, replacing the rubber lines if they're tired) will be everything you ever need for street driving, no matter how aggressive you make your car or the driving.

Depends on usage. If street, reco. you replace pads and call it a day.

Skip the x-drilled rotors. You need all the metal you can get to help dissipate the heat
 

Upgrade your pads and brake fluid to DOT5.1 and you'll have a nice setup for the street.

Ditto - just a pad and fluid upgrade.
 

Personally, I use the basic, off-the-shelf Ford brake fluid. IIRC it's boiling point is something like 550F. Ran it in my bikes when I used to roadrace, stuff worked like a charm. Better than any of the more popular, expensive fluid I tried (Motul, Super Blue to name a few). Plus it's chean and you can get it at any Ford parts counter.

Decent pad upgrade - some good suggestions here.

And I'd also do steel lines just to firm up the pedal a bit.

I have a Porsche BBK on my GTI and while it certainly LOOKS bad ass, and definitely DOES stop like a mf'er, I probably could've gotten most of that braking force upgrade with a pad/fluid/line update.

I'll probably go with the stainless brake lines, decent fluid and some mintex red box. Not sure about the crossdrilled/slotted rotors...but tempted by the bling!! ;-) Anybody know how much pad is left when the sensor goes off?
