Diesel option for 2009 A4
"Audi will be introducing the new, clean version of its TDI diesel engine in Europe and the U.S. beginning mid-2008 -- an engine it claims will be the cleanest diesel in the world.
Exceeding new stringent European emissions regulations as well as the Tier2/Bin5 regulations mandated in such U.S. states as California and New York, the 3.0-liter V-6 TDI will be available in all 50 states. Audi says the engine will be good for 240 horsepower with 369 pound-feet of torque and 406 pound-feet of torque in the A4 sedan and Q7 SUV, respectively. Audi will be expanding its diesel lineup to include other vehicles by 2010."
Very nice. I'll wait at least one year for Audi to fix its teething problems and then replace my B5 with a B8 Avant. Chipped it will offer S4 performance (more torque though) with 30mpg.
Oh, and today while leaving a restaurant near the Seine in Paris I noticed a brand new Ford Mondeo parked next to my crappy Citroen rental.
That car is strong competition for the A4 here. Great 2.5 turbo, active suspension. Amazing when you compare these Genk, Belgium build cars with the junky Fords sold in the US. Check out the link....

I'll take One!!!- Avant type... Please.
For me, this is exactly what I was hoping for (I know the Avant may be a stretch) -
Any idea when a American smuck like me can pre-order the A4 TDI diesel?

Audi is getting smart. Those cars will have no trouble selling. Sign me up. If only Ford
was smart emough to make their US cars as good as their European cars, it might get some of the market share back it has given away over the years.

Smell of diesel is a great thing! My co-worker has diesel VW Passat
I know that his car in on our parking even without seeing it, only by smell. Please keep that in mind - we need to pay something for fuel economy and torque. This something is hard start in cold period of the year (which may be really cold in the US according to my November's MN experience...), sound and vibration from idle engine and smell of diesel fuel.
In addiion, in regions where diesel engines are not so popular, service people will stare at them without even guessing what may be wrong.
So no diesel for me please.
