Default Erratic Fuel Level Sensor

I just changed the in tank fuel pump and fuel filter on my 2006 2.0 and now I am getting erratic fuel level readings, I have not filled tank up all the way but I put about half a tank in it and it said 75 miles to empty, the next time I drove it 155 miles to empty, next time 120 miles, etc. I did check the floater on the fuel pump and it was not caught on anything.

Any Ideas on why the fuel level is so erratic?

Changing the fuel pump did make the car run a lot smoother.

Distance to Empty calculation is always based upon current fuel consumption rate. Best thing to do is fill the tank and measure how many miles you travel then refill a 2nd and 3rd time. That will give you a new baseline and then start comparing the fuel level vs Distance to Empty and see if things have returned back to where you expect them to be.

I topped the tank off and the gage at the time was reading 40 miles to empty, the tank only needed 8.5 gallons to be full, the car is running great and the fuel readings are still erratic. I am wondering if when I changed the fuel pump the floater is caught on a tube or wires, the float seemed free when I fit the pump into the whole. Or the G410 sensor went bad when I changed the pump (is there DIY out there on replacing this, or a diagram of where it is located?)

The check engine light is on, which is usually not a problem but I need an emissions test and as of January this year the State of Colorado does not pass cars with a check engine light. I checked the codes and it is throwing the following codes:

012555 - Low Pressure Fuel regulation
P310B - 004 - Fuel Pressure Outside Specification - Intermittent
Freeze Frame:

008577 - Performance Malfunction in Cooling System

Any Ideas on how to clear these? For the P2181 code I have changed the CTS (it was grey is there are green one on my car that may be bad too?), and thermostat about a year ago and the MIL will come off and on depending on the temperature of the car when it is started.

For the P310B code I believe it is something to do with my fuel pump, any advice is appreciated.

So, I don' think it is the G410 sensor, just before I hit 120,000 miles I took it into the dealership and had them update all the warranty extensions and they replaced the G410 sensor and various other parts that still had an extended warranty.

I personally can live with the Check engine light on but the State of Colorado cannot.

I recall a post where you need to pull the fuses for the fuel pump and the instrument cluster after you change the pump.
Pull the fuses, turn the ignition to on (not start) and turn off. Replace the fuses. This is supposed to reset the sender unit position to the instrument panel.

Not sure of the fuse numbers, they are 15 & 28 on the 2005 1.8T model, but we get slightly different versions to the US

I pulled the fuses and reset the instrument cluster and it is still reading lower than normal. I am going to pull the pump this weekend and see if the float is caught on any of the tubes or wires, while doing this I will pull the fuses as well.

Thanks for the help.

You got a confusing description of your problem....

First off that cooling system fault is your thermostat....

Secondary..... The fuel level in cluster is what responds to your fuel senders.

The distance to empty isn't an exact measurement. It's a calculation based on a formula. That's all inside your cluster.

There's a few causes behind the 310b fault. Usually the tank pump, sensor on the high pressure pump, or the filter under the car.

But your also dumping more fuel than usually with a faulty cooling system. Which could be throwing off your calculations in the cluster.

This weekend I removed the pump again made sure the float on the side of the pump was not caught on anything and disconnected and reconnected the hoses then put the pump back into place. Fuel levels are now reading fine.

I am pretty sure the P2181 code is not the thermostat, I changed the thermostat and the CTS about 8 months ago trying to get rid of the code and it didn't permanently get rid of the code.

I did clear the codes on Friday and this morning the CEL came on again, not too worried about it since the car is running great and while the light was off I was able to get my emissions test done.
