Default ESP button - holding it down for eight seconds

I'm too lazy to go to the car and get the owners manual right now and look this up, but one of the guys last night at our regular Friday night coffee meet mentioned pushing on the ESP button for at least eight seconds to turn off the whole system entirely.

I didn't think that did anything so I did that today, and after eight seconds, let go and the light went off. Typically it stays on when you just push and let go right away. Push on the ESP and the light comes on but as soon as you let go the light went off again. Normal behaviour was restored when the engine was turned off then back on.

What's up with this?

Default Yeah they lied to you. If you hold it down that long it just turns back on

I tried it last winter to see if I could turn it all the way off. Just press it once is the most you can get the Esp off.

So what's happening after I let go after 8 seconds, I can't get the ESP warning light to stay on anymore? If I shut the car off then turn it back on, then I can enable/disable that warning light normally.

There is only on and off, and yes off turns it completely off.

He is talking older Audi, where there was two modes according to manuals.

Default RS4

I believe I read this feature is on the '07 RS4.
I don't remember the details, but I also tried it and I encountered the same results as Tanner.

Default The one time I had mine in snow, the system seemed 100% off...

Granted, just one time, but with the ESP switched off, I was sliding the car at will, steering with the throttle, and didn't detect any kind of interference. Mercedes products, most noticeably a supercharged S55 I drove, seem to never completely disable their traction electronics, but as far as I could tell, my A4 was working without a net...

Default Had it off and was able to power slide sideways through a corner

The only thing still being active is the EDL, and only way to truely deactive it and ABS is to yank out the #11 fuse.
