To those seasoned veterans out there...I have a 2006 A4 Avant, and very recently have been noticing a clunk 'down below' at the front end occasionally when I turn the wheel right and move slowly after being at rest for some time. I'm suspecting a ball joint somewhere....anybody else experience something similar? The car tracks fine with steering and feels solid at speed but I have the feeling that something has worn out and needs replacing....there's 72K on her.

Any input would be welcome,

The control arms are a common problem on all the A4's. Worn control arm bushings and ball joints will cause clunks, squeaks, groans and the like. Have the arms inspected. Chances are you'll want to pick up a control arm kit like the ones we've got. Refresh the entire front end like new.

Agree.
also try to reproduce the sound stepping lightly on the brakes.
sometimes the brake pads move in the caliper carrier making this kind of noises, specially aftermarket pads.

Thanks for the input guys. I did try the brake thing but it doesn't appear to be that...this is a real mechanical clunk from the front right of the car under the footwell...I'll get it checked out and if it's the ball joints then I may take you up on a control arm kit in the near future Mike!
