Default Getting a key Cut

I purchased a blank key for my 2007 A4. I called the Audi dealer and was told at first they could cut the key (they have a machine) and the coding would cost $70. They couldn't guarantee they could cut it perfectly though. Then mid conversation, the service guy says they won't cut it (I could hear someone talking off to the side, like the manager or something). This of course prompted my question about why they have a cutting machine, to which he replied they don't use it anymore. Whatever.

I can get it coded there, but where the heck can I get it cut? Any ideas and help are appreciated.

Google auto locksmiths in your area. That's what i did & the cut was excellent.

A VW dealer or Porsche dealer uses the same machine. I'd call them and ask what their key cutting programs are.

Audi01A6 is right, I just noticed the year of your car. 05 and up cars must be ordered by VIN number. What I said above does apply to 04 and older Audi cars though.

Surprises me that no one can cut this key. I know I need to get it programmed at the dealer, but the cutting, come on. Sounds like a scam or some sort of proprietary deal where a privateer risks getting sued for using someone's (Audi's) key cutting technology.

Physically the key could be put in the machine and cut to match. But when we order them Audi programs the key and cuts it. Then when the key gets to your dealer the car is then programmed to the key. So there is more to it than just cutting the blade.

I had to ask, I wondered the same as you did.

I made the mistake of buying a blank from a private party, so now I'm stuck with trying to get it cut by a locksmith, and then programmed at the dealer. The dealer part will be fine, I just can't find anyone in St. Louis who can cut it. Have even called places that advertise they can work on Audi keys. Anoyyyyying.

I had a key cut by a VW dealer, but as posted, you need to have the dealer program it, and even that service is expensive..... California passed a law I believe stating that car makers needed to allow locksmiths to do programming, I don't know what happened with that.........

So what do you normally charge for a key? I was quoted $125 from the local locksmith. I bought it for $56 at the dealer. I just needed a flat key to mechanically lock the car so nobody steals it when I warm it up in the driveway.
