Heavy Groan When Braking

Heavy Groan When Braking
My A4 has just reached 5000km yesterday and this phenomenon I am just about to describe has never happened before, ever.
Well today I was reversing the car as I was turning and of course it's normal that at full turn there will be vibration from the steering. But I also noticed something that has never happened before.
The brake makes a heavy-toned groaning noise as I was slowly reversing and especially when I am near a certain 'spot' in the brake it groans loud. I tried to replicate this situation later and it turns out it's now quite noticable everytime I brake. I've only been able to try it out at low speed.
Now, could it have anything to do with brake dust? I last washed my car 3 weeks ago and there is quite a lot of brake dust built up. I don't think this should be a problem though because in the past I've left it unwashed up to a month and no such problem.
What could be the problem? Must be a coincident but this happened after the car had contact with water as it rained today.

Rotors are highly susceptible to surface oxcidization...
if you look at your rotors just a few minutes after spraying water on them you will see a brown film or surface rust. It comes off after a good braking and the moan should go away. cheers! Mike

What's that?
thanks for explaning but what exactly does that mean? it just happened becoz of dust on rotors? any idea why this happened suddenly when it was fine before?
how can we make sure to get rid of it for sure?
thanks!

It's a light layer of rust that forms when damp. It should go...
away when you apply the brakes and remove that layer. It will be more noticeable if you very softly apply the brakes bc you are not scrubbing the layer off. Again, just spray down the rotor with the hose and see it form. Then do the light braking thing. If that is the noise you are hearing than mystery is solved. If not, than let us know and we can go from there. cheers! Mike

Happens often "against direction of travel"
My brakes have been making that noise forever - of course I have had huge aftermarket brakes for the past 7 years, so that exaggerates everything good _and_ bad about them.
This groan is normal for me whenever I am backing up. It's caused by brake vibration (ever so slight), which is different when going against the usual direction of travel.

Re: Happens often "against direction of travel"
Problem seems to have done away. So looks like what has been described by bhvrdr.
Thanks for the help. Hope it doesn't happen much too often, I just can't stand that noise. Reminds me of my older Benz which starting having this problem as it aged.
