Help - Sudden big loss in MPG
I have a B7 all stock about 85K miles. A few days ago suddenly pretty strong fuel smell in the car shortly after starting and while idling. One and done, never happened before or since. However, just recently also noticed big loss in MPG. Used to get about 350-380 miles per tank, 50-50 mix city/.hwy. Now suddenly getting about 200-250 miles per tank. Suspected fuel leak, this am took to my trusted shop, they did full inspection including fuel pump and all dry, no evidence of any leak. I replaced my fuel filter DIY about 2 years ago so shop said that's not likely the issue.
I replaced my spark plugs about 6 years ago, but I was told spark plug replacement goes by mileage, not time, and I've only put about 30-40K miles. I've researched on the web and I know a bunch of things can adversely affect MPG, but this is a very big, recent drop that was associated with a one-time strong fuel smell (not after filling up, just random). No CEL.
Based on the above, any thoughts/suggestions would be much appreciated. Thanks.
