2006 A4 Went to add washer fluid to car yesterday and the hood pull cable lever inside car had zero tension on cable when pulled. The cable is still hooked to the lever but there is zero tension on cable.

I took cable out of lever housing and tried to pull on it with pliers to release hood latch but nothing happened. Didnt feel as if me pulling had any effect on the cable. Didnt seem to move at all.

Any ideas or help to get access into engine compartment? I can replace cable and hood release mechanism if needed but need to get into engine compartment to see if cable came out of release or the release is broken.
