would the Passat be considered the VW sister of the A4?? Or would it be the Jetta?

Neither. The car is no longer platform sharing with either of those.

I believe, for the B6, the passat was the A6 and the Jetta was the A4.

The B5 Passat was related to the B5 A4, as was the A6 from the same period. It had a longitudinal drivetrain like an A4.

The new Passat is based on a stretched and widened Mk V Jetta chassis. It has a unique floorpan and suspension components, but most of the bolt-on systems (electrical, HVAC, etc.) are common with the Jetta. It has a transverse drivetrain, and unlike the previous Passat the V6 is a narrow-V engine -- like a VR6.

Default The previous generation Passat shared platforms with the B6 A4

In fact, it shared a great deal of things, not just the platform.

The new Passat (as someone below stated already) is based on a stretched new Jetta platform and shares almost nothing, save the 2.0T engine in the 4 cyl models, (but mounted transversely) with the B7 A4.

No shared components between Jetta and A4 models except for turbo engines.

That's B5 A4; not B6.

Default I'm sure it's the B6. I cross-shopped both '02 models before buying a new B6 in 2002

The cars were, virtually identical.

The differences for the 4 cyl models were in trim, tranny, amenities and service only.

Naturally, the Audi was MUCH nicer. It was also 4 grand more.

ok...now I'm only 75% sure. But the VW sure seemed like the B6 A4's twin sister ;-)

Default B5 Passat = B5 A4

The similar features may have continued after the B6 A4 was introduced, as it does even today.

But if you climbed under both B5's you'd find identical engines, suspensions & transmissions. Those commonalities ended when the B6 A4 came out in 2002, as the Passat continued to use the old platform until the '06 model year.
