Keys locked in car - How?
 

Earlier this month, I locked the keys in the B7A4 car (driver window was open, I'm not that dumb). The thing is, I'm trying to figure out how I did it.

The events went like this:
* Stopped the car on level ground.
* Turned car off & Put the keys on the ash tray.
* Exited the vehicle.
* [a few minutes pass]
* All doors are locked.

So, how does one go about getting the doors locked? I'm certain that there was no foul play.... for example, no one reached in and pressed the lock button after the door was closed.

are you sure that sequence is exactly right
 

and you didn't unlock at some point from the outside? i think if you unlock but don't actually open the driver side door within a certain time, it relocks itself automatically.

First of all the A4 does not lock itself automatically under normal conditions. I leave mine unlacked in the garage all night and it's still unlocked in the morning.

My car did lock itself several times (once while running and once while the keys were in the ignition but turned off) when I was having problems with my trunk latch. By the way, the trunk did not lock when the car locked. I replaced the trunk latch some months ago and have not had the car lock on its own since. My theory is that the faulty trunk latch was confusing the control computer and somehow allowing the car to lock itself. If you've also had problems with your trunk latch I believe replacing it will fix the auto locking problem.

The sequence is correct.
 

It has to be. the keys never left the interior of the vehcile, so i could not have locked the car from the outside.

I've not been able to replicate since. The car stays unlocked in the garage all night, that does not seem to be a problem.

Looks like no one knows. It was quite strange. I'm glad i didn't have the windows up.

This is a really old thread. Replying to myself for closeout and for anyone in the future that has this problem.

Similar to Barry in Utah, replacing the electric trunk latch fixed this issue. In my case, i only replaced the electric trunk latch when it started acting up, making trunk use a problem. It seems this was the root cause as after replacing this, the locking problem did not return.
