Page 104 of NAV manual - anyone actually get this to work?

Page 104 of NAV manual - anyone actually get this to work?
According to page 104, you are supposed to be able to click MODE, select a name in the cluster, press the talk button, say "store number", and then store a name associated with the name you chose from the phonebook.
I can get up to the point where the system asks me for the name, but then the system asks for the phone number! This makes me believe that the system is not actually assocating the name I spoke with the name and number displaying in the cluster from my phonebook.
I'm even more confused by the directions starting on page 109. They seem to be different directions for the same functions. They don't work either though!
Can anyone set this very confused A4 owner striaght?

It does the same with a non-NAV system, and when I asked the deealer, they told me that this is how it works, disregard the manual etc....
