Default reliability vs BMW

I am coming from a 2003 BMW 325xi and a 2003 BMW M3 both were standard, I just sold both of them and has been hearing that the new body style of the 5 and 3 series BMW are having a lot of reliability issues. I love the look of the audi's and was thinking of switching. I drive a lot and was looking at buying a 2005+ A4 or S4. I know there is a camshaft follower problem but what else is there really. I put about 30-40k a year on my cars I am a traveling sales man. Any help would be great thanks so much

Don't know if there's really any quantitative staement that can be made that an Audi is more or less reliable than the 3 & 5 series. With 30-40K mi per year, after 2 years you are getting into the "major maintenance" phases for any car anyway. You'd likely find out about all the common problems (cam follower, DV, PCV, tumbler flaps) within that first year with your high mileage rate. If you didn't, on odds are that your car was one of the "better" build ones and as long as you keep the scheduled maintenance you'll be good to go for a while from there. I've had my Avant coming up to 4 years now and my only problems have been a rear seat belt buckle and the PCV. I'll get the cam follower replaced close to the end of warranty and expect things to be solid from that point on.

Thank you so much I really appreciate the response. Are those DV, PCV, tumbler flaps very expensive to fix... I guess I was wondering if it would be cheaper to fix than a BMW. I know that Audi and Volkswagen share technology and parts similar to Lexus and Toyota and Nissan and Infiniti which can make then cheaper to fix..... Also is the Turbo or non Turbo more reliable of an engine. Thanks so much I really appreciate it everyone.
