splicing into always-on power
I have an XM currently plugged into the cigarette power next to the arm rest. What's the best way to use the always on power whether it's splicing into current wiring or easier?

Re: splicing into always-on power
Somewhere adjacent to your fuse block (under the dash), is a "load center" with terminals for both switched and unswitched power. You can tap in there without damaging any existing wiring, and it's a lot cleaner than anything you might add to the fusebox. All you need is an eye connector.
I would recommend switched power unless you really need to use an accessory when the power's off. Be sure to use an inline fuse. And before you cut off the 12VDC plug, be sure you're not eliminating a necessary adapter. XM Radios take 4-6 volts -- something that looks like a simple plug may also have some important circuits in it. |

Results of Aux input
I installed both...
-P.I.E. AA3-HAR and -P.I.E. VWR-AUX 1998-2005 VW/Audi Aux Input Conv ...last night using the four radio keys w/o problems. I now have a VERY clear AUX input. My last car (2000 BMW) had static with a similar solution. I tried to hack the cigarette lighter power cable (with DC-DC transformer) to plug straight into the fuse box but without luck. I'll have to buy this to be able to hardwire it. http://www.myradiostore.us/power-accessories/hardwired-car-power-adapter.html Mark 2006 A4 2.0T w/o NAV/XM |
What does the load center look like, and where do I connect...
for switched power?

There's a plastic relay block under the dash, behind the fuses.
In addition to the relays, it has a couple of threaded posts that provide switched and unswitched power to accessories. One of these terminals is hot all the time (unswitched). All the wires leading from it are red.
The switched terminal is labeled "75x". This terminal is only hot when the ignition is on. It goes without saying that if you plan to work with these terminals you should disconnect the battery first. |
