Default Test-drove a G37-S (manual), leaving me... perplexed

Handled too much like a floaty boat, relative to the competition. Off-the-line acceleration was a big disappointment, too.

Why is this POS so popular? I don't get it.

Many people like the "floaty boat" feeling. I prefer a car which feels like it is firmly on the road, not floating over it.

Default Edmunds' review

Okay, don't take my word for it. Edmunds just road-tested it. I think because they're reviewing it in a broader context, they're more positive. However, I did find a few choice bits:
the G37 can't quite match the Z's acceleration or handling
This is an understatement - the 2.0T A3 loaner I was in felt peppy, by comparison.
It doesn't quite have the agile sports-car feel of a 370Z or BMW 135i
I can attest to this, as I drove a 135i (manual), right afterwards.
It is highly responsive to inputs, but the overall effect is a tad artificial, and more road feel could be transmitted to the driver's hands.
That's what I call "floaty".

BTW, the reason I'm posting here is that the G35 has been mentioned in this forum, several times, as it's in a similar class. Also, I'm comparing it to my own modded B7 A4.

I'm surprised to hear you're disappointed with the G37 acceleration. My understanding is they get to 60 in about 5 seconds, while the B7 3.2 takes almost 7 seconds to get to 60. If your B7 3.2 is faster than the G37, then I'm eager to hear what you did to get all that extra oomph. I have a B7 3.2 and am hankering for more HP. What can I do?

Naw, spec is like 6.2s on the 3.2 manual. Don't know about the G37 and I also don't care. What I said is that off-the-line torque sucked. Maybe it's good when you rev the hell out of it, but it's nowhere near as eager as my 3.2.

If you don't believe me, go and test drive one for yourself. I'd be curious to hear what you think.

BTW, the salesman didn't know how to disable traction control. If he did, maybe it'd have been a bit different. I also didn't think to ask if there was any sort of "sport" mode. As it was manual, a sport mode couldn't have helped *that* much.

I see... Mine's the auto, so not quite as fast. And yes indeed it's quite a hammer jumping off the line. I do enjoy that.

Actually, I thought of another possible explanation. It seems unlikely they'd be this ignorant, but if they put 87 octane gas in it, I bet that'd explain the lackluster acceleration.
