Thoughts on changing brake pads (OEM), change rotors necessary?
Hi All, I need to change my pads and just ordered OEMs and should be doing the job by this Sat. I talked to my shop and they stated for newer European cars they recommend changing the rotors as well since they will squeal but if I leave the old rotors they shouldn't have any safety issue. I was wondering if anyone changed pads w/o changing the rotors as well for your first pads (30k miles) and if you do notice the squeal how bad is it? Thanks.

You can usually do one rotor to two sets of pads. If the rotors are in good shape, as in
thickness, any lip, etc, you should be fine running another set of pads before replacing the rotors.
I'm on my second set of pads (just changed out my original set this weekend at 69k miles) now and first rotor didn't have much of a lip, still thick enough.

This was my thought too, no squeaking w/ new pads? also, is 30k mi for new pads seem a lil low?.....
I dont auto-X or anything and drive moderate to agressive (but agreesive maybe on the weekends?)

I had an initial squeak the day after I put them on but this is normal for a little squeak.
It only happened when coming to a stop slowly, say from 30 - 0 gradual stop. It was a faint squeal but has gone away since.
30k for pads isn't too abnormal, all depends on your stopping habits and driving habits. If you do a lot of city driving, you're going to be on the brakes more than if you did highway driving (I do 80% highway and am rarely on the brakes hence the 69k mile pads, could have gone longer too!).
You'll get a little squeal the first few days driving but after that, it'll go away...nothing to worry about.

Re: thanks greg, yeah having to change out rotors at 30k seems excessive, i checked n.....
they dont seem to be warped or feel vibration when i break. I do feel stopping power to be fading as the brake pad worn light has been on for about 10 days. I have the pads already now and was going to put them in Sat., but should I wait until about Wed or later when the rotors come in as well since I did order them already? Or save them the next time around?

I would double check your current rotors to see what condition they're in. If they're still thick
and not much lip, I would keep them and use them up and save the new rotors for the next set of pads. No use in wasting the good rotors.
