2009 audi a4 oil consumption
Hi all I have a 2009 audi a4, and have noticed higher than normal oil consumption. Browsing the post I can't find a reason for this consumption and if it is normal. Most posts are just talking about it, with no real resolution. Any help would be much help appreciated.

I am about 4000 km per quart, so in the range you mention. Will this have any effect on the long term durability of the engine. What is exactly causing the high consumption?

- Faulty or poor-performing oil vapor pressure control valve. That's addressed with the stage I fix which is fairly cheap ($500-$700) and they don't need convincing to do it for you.
- Oil wiper rings on the pistons which wear over time and the consumption gets worse. That is the expensive stage II fix ($5000-$7000) and they will only do it for free if after stage I you are around 2k miles per quart or below.
Both have been done outside of warranty, sometimes they would split the labor cost of stage II with the customer.
You should do at least stage I. Not doing it causes extra carbon deposits in the intake and the valves which will eventually lead to malfunction and you will have to pay about $700 to have it cleaned to restore the performance. Some people have done the cleaning themselves - there is a DIY on audizine.com by dan_q.
When I bought mine the rate was 5-6k miles per quart. It then deteriorated to 3k. It's been 5+k since stage I. It's not clear for which model year they changed the piston rings. The original info was that it happened for MY2011, but that does not have the revised PCV or re-breather as they also call this valve. 2012 doesn't have the problem and it does have the new PCV. That doesn't mean that it does not consume oil. The consumption still depends on the driving conditions, trips duration and others, but it's not something to worry about for MY2012+ in North America.
