I usually do it by filling the tank to the top of the filler neck. Drive 100 miles and fill it up again to the same spot. Then do the math.

Check out these average MPG's from fuelly.com...generally in the 23-25MPG range for B8's, which is what I used to get with my '09 2.0T.

I get 20-22 mpg for my brief daily commute, which is all city streets. On long highway trips, I always get 30-34 mpg. (2010 A4 quattro with automatic shift). I use 93 octane gas.
