Default 2013 A4 steering feel

Anyone else notice something funky with the new electric assist steering of recent vintage? On center feel is sloppy and it feels as the vehicle darts slightly to the right and left as the assist level goes in and out.

Think I have a programming issue? Car has 200 miles on it and Audi / ZF steering has always been best in world.

FrontTrak or quattro? I have noticed terrible torque steer in frontwheel drive cars. With pedal down it darn near jerks the wheel out of your hands.

...
Audi has acknowledged that there is a "comfort" problem with the new electric servo steering, that matches your symptoms. They have tried one software update but recalled it and say they are working on a solution.

There are many threads about this and even some youtube videos (google search). I don't know if it is just programming. A number of people claim the problem developed after a few thousand miles of driving, in which case it means a hardware issue. But they may just have noticed it then, in which case it may indeed be just a software problem. Whatever the case, I have put a hold on the idea of getting an A4 until this issue is resolved/explained.

Really? That's surprising. I thought with the longitudinal layout and equal length shaft the problem was non-existent on Audis.

Here's some threads from other sources describing the steering issue. I have noticed a vagueness with on center steering at speed, (more noticeable in Comfort mode in my case), and others are reporting an even more obtrusive issue with the wheel jerking with a notchiness feel. There's a temporary fix described in the threads that has worked for some.

While my issue at 8K miles is mild, it appears that others are having bigger problems that might be getting worse as time goes by. Hopefully, Audi will provide a solution soon.

My November 2012 car had this problem, but it only happened until the car was warm, no idea why.

My March 2013 car (don't ask, the 2012 got rejected due to "problems") hasn't yet exhibited any of the same symptoms, no idea if it has a different software revision.

Default A4 steering feel

No, the car is not FWD and it's absolutley not torque steer. This is almost a hunt and peck feel with the on center position.

Its almost as though the vehicle decides arbitrarily it needs some assist when on center making it feel firm to sloppy or loose. My 02 A4 with full hydraulic has rock solid on center as well as my 09. Maybe more technology might not be the best solution?

Dealer will be notified and I'll see what they say.

It's not really torque steer so much as too much torque for a FWD. In a straight line it's mostly ok, but if you hit the gas in a turn you really need to keep a firm grip on the wheel. Traction control goes off, etc...

My last loaner was quattro.... it's night and day. I can't wait for this lease to be up and switch. Learned my lesson.
