Not all 2009 2.0t have had to have rings and pistons replaced. Mine is a 2009 and has never had any oil consumption issues at all. @ OP that is why consumer reports marked it the way they did. Many of those cars would drink a quart of oil about every 1000 miles. They should all use some oil...but nothing near that high.
Just to help cover yourself, get a warranty with whatever car you decide on.

$30K for 31,000 miles, with quattro on a 2009 A4 3.2L - isn't this high?

KBB puts my 2009 2.0T ~$16K, and I have the P+ model with Nav & Quattro.
That's a convertible with old B7 chassis still available in 2009.

All of these 2009 A4 B8 3.2's are asking well under $30K.

Agreed. Just what the hell is wrong with a teenager buying a freaking VW to start? Its cheaper to buy, cheaper to own and cheaper to insure. And cheaper to fix when he wrecks it.

snag, thank you. I don't know how I missed "convertible" right there in the title. Those P+ 3.2,s are still $27-29K. More than I thought they'd go for.

Cyncris, honestly, I don't know how prevalent the oil consumption problem is. There's a lot of posts about it on the forums....but people only write things online when they have problems. Uneven sample.

My car used to burn ~1qt every 5000 miles, and recently at 70K miles, it's jumped up to every 1000 miles.

So far the OP has said he wants the A4 because it is safe, and I'm assuming there's an "OOOH PRETTY, SHINY!" effect too.

OP, care to weigh in?

Well, I sure think the A4 is an astonishing looking car but I am interested because I live in a family of BMW's and I would like to separate myself from my parents and their BMW's. Also, I would like to explicitly state I don't drive like an imbecile 16 year old who just got his license, but rather the mature 17 year old that I am. So, no "wrapping myself around a tree" is not actually a concern I have for myself. Simply, I want an A4; cost is not of concern if I'm driving a safe, elegant, reliable car.

I only recall one model you said to check out, a low mileage 2009 3.2 V6 Quattro and I can only seem to find ones with high mileage in my area.

A young man comes to the AW Forum to ask for help about an Audi. There's no need to pass judgement or talk down to him. That's not what we're about here; we're here to help anyone who asks for it the best we can, right?

You may have to go farther afield to find a low mileage 3.2 that meets your needs and price point. There were far fewer of the V6 sold than the 2.0 in 2009 so they will be a rarer bird. Most buyers opted for the 2.0 for the lower price and somewhat better fuel mileage. You will be hard pressed to find any 2009 with much less than 35-40k miles. Since car should last well over 150k miles, there will be plenty of life left if well maintained. I sold my 2001 A6 four years ago to a friend with 98k miles on it. He's now selling it to another friend with 220k miles and still going strong. It's a 6 cyl by the way.

Thank you sir, I actually just found this one and it seems to be a fair price for 40k. One question though, is this 2009 3.2 that more reliable than say a 2011 2.0? I feel that I have narrowed it down to these two and now it just comes down to which is the "better" car.
