I have a Ford 500 now and it fits me fine. Lots of Americans don't
like the "cockpit feel" of today's cars, especially the older crowd. Maybe that's why they feel cramped.
One of my service techs (6'2")just got a new Taurus for his company car and said he G6 driver's seat went further back than the Taurus. Of course, you couldn't sit behind him in his G6 when he did that.
Go sit in the back seat of the Taurus with the front seat all the back. You'll be amazed at the room - like an A8 LWB area.

the first time I saw an EX I was genuinely scared
I'm sure the inside is very nice, but wow, hands down one of the most awkward looking vehicles on the road...

I have my G8 GT, but will have the wife look at the SHO when her lease is up.
The Avant that she wants is going to be too expensive, even though I'd like to stay with Audi. She used to have a 95 SHO, so this is something to consider.
