I have an Audi A8 2011 4.2 V8. Recently I experienced an issue where the gears would not engage. When I select a gear it automatically moved to the 'P' position without selecting a gear. This happens on all gears.


I had a recovery diagnostics done on it and the following information came up:

8724 - Parking Lock Mechanical malfunction -under the Transmission control module (02 Gearbox electronics) section.

Any idea what could be causing the issue? any help or suggestions will be much appreciated.

Hi,

Unfortunately it is not good news if it is anything similar to mine. My Gear box fluid cooler failed and as a result water leaked into the gearbox. This required a full gearbox rebuild costing almost 4k. luckily I had mine under warranty which took the sting out of the over all bill.

As you can imagine the gearbox is a complex piece of kit and there are a number of things which can potentially be the problem. My advice will be to take it to a gearbox specialist. These guys are absolute geniuses!! cant recommend them highly enough.

Parking Lock Mechanical Malfunction same problem also in my 2013 Audi A8. anyone can suggest to me what was the cause.

Number 3 is the parking interlock module. There's nothing you can do to access it without major disassembly.
