Break job rip-off?

Break job rip-off?
Folks - I have a 2013 A4 Prm+ that I got used in the fall. It has now 34k miles. I do mostly city stop and go traffic. The breaks need to be replaced soon. Not sure if just some pads, some rotors or all the rotors and pads. I'm suspecting they are the original rotors/pads. Worst case I was thinking all the pads and all rotors need to be replaced. I live in Boston MA and asked the Audi stealership in Brookline how much. They said I have 4mm left on the rotors (but didn't say which ones). They quoted $900 for fronts and $700 rear for all pads/rotors replacement. After tax and what not it will be ~$1700. My bull **** radar immediately went off. Does this sound right to you?
I called and independent shop and after verifying they have the computer to unlock the rear brakes, they said it's about a $900-1k job. Sound right?
But at just 34k miles in, do I really need to replace everything. What about just pads?

You can do it yourself for a few hundred with good quality parts. They also flush the brake lines if I remember right, which might be some of that time and materials they add. You will need a way to release the parking brake for the rears, usually done using the VCDS or vag-com tool, but it's all pretty easy with basic tools. You'll want two people if you are going to do some flushing.
In any case, this is a great opportunity to save some money, that price seems quite high.

Hell-to-the-yes that is a rip-off! You can DIY - parts are about $500 and it's an all-day job if you have never done it before. $900 sound reasonable if you are not up for getting dirty and potentially running into problems. I went with EBC rotors and pads and like them - zero squeal.
