Engine Oil Consumption /Piston heads replaced
Hi all,
My 2011 A4 quattro failed an engine oil consumption test and Audi replaced my piston heads. Once I got the car back, I've noticed the sound of the engine is completely different. The best way I can describe it is that it sounds like a diesel engine or an angry v8 roaring (going from 15km/h -60km/h). I can't even hear the turbo spooling anymore.
Is this normal? Has anyone experienced this? I voiced my concern to the dealership and they took a second look at it and said it was fine. Although they also said they didn't hear anything wrong (yet it can drown out my radio), it sounds like my engine is under a lot stress.
Thanks in advance

Teek, welcome aboard! The engine should not sound vastly different. I gather you had pistons replaced? What else did they do?

Hi uberwgn! Glad to be aboard!
They didn't specify any details on what exactly was done. Just gave me the sheet with the parts that were ordered and it was nothing out of the ordinary. It just sounds so loud and I don't know why. The service guy told me they've done 100's of them over the past two years since the recall and said this was normal.
I'm not that savvy with mechanics but how can I investigate further? I've been told to complain louder till Audi fixes it but that's going to be awhile before I get anywhere.
Thanks for the reply

I just had the oil consumption piston rebuild done on my son's 2010 A4, with 40,000 miles on it, and if anything it seems a bit quieter. However, I also had them replace the timing chain and tensioner while the engine was apart ($700 extra).
I'm surprised that Audi did the rebuild for me because the consumption wasn't really too high, but it was trending worse. In fact, the service writer initially told me that Audi would reject the rebuild when I brought the car back with about 2000 miles on it to reach "low oil" since the oil refill, but after checking with Audi, he got the go ahead because of the relatively low mileage.
Good for Audi!

2013 A4 - engine oil consumption test fail - piston replace
I am having the issue right now. I noticed that the necessity to replace the engine oil much more frequently after 50K miles. Recently, I brought it to the attention while having my 85K service done. They did part 1 of the consumption test. 1 month (1K miles) later, the light came back on and Audi service did part 2 of the test where it failed completely. They believe it has to do with the pistons and that it needs to be replaced. Will update if i feel there is anything wrong after they resolve it.
