Default First oil change Oil Filter issue

I was doing my first oil change on new to me 2015 Audi A4 Quattro 2.0T and I purchased a filter and oil from a big box retailer. I drained the oil and removed the filter, the old

filter doesn't look like the new one... Anyone have this issue where the oil filter removed looks more like a traditional filter without the nipple adapter?

That's strange. We've got an '11 A4 and a '15 Q5, both fitted with the 2 liter engine. Both of them use the filter on the left in your foto.

The nipple usually comes out with the filter, but will occasionally stay in the engine. Just grab it with some pliers to loosen and spin it out.

Thank you for that! Didn't realize that there wouldn't be any threadlock on that nipple adapter but nonetheless thanks for the info! I thought that was it but I didn't want to grab those threads unnecessarily. Oil Change complete!

That is odd. I've done quite a few changes on our cars and have never seen that come apart. OTOH, we never use non-OE quality filters.

I would not use the filter on the right as I don't believe it is an anti drain unit . The one on the left whether it be OEM or Mann is the correct one for a top engine mounted filter. It has an anti drain valve which keeps oil in the filter for lubrication during start up.

Guess that's what you get for the last owner going cheap. At $10, there's no excuse for cheaping out on the filter.

And it's 20 Nm, not 20 ft lb. In case that's why the last owner landed you in this situation.

FWIW, the nipple can do this on an Audi or Mann filter also. Its happened to me and I only hand tighten the filter. Not a big deal....my dealer also encounters this.
I agree it's wise to avoid cheap filters.

If you have to remove the nipple with pliers make sure you pad the pliers. Very easy to drop some metal into the filter housing.
