Fuel Injector Hung Open?
I'm driving a 2010 2.0T Quattro - Premium - 6spd MT. I got it in August of 2009 and have just over 32k miles on it.
Last week I fired the car up and within a mile or so, it started sputtering violently, lost power, engine light went on, and a terrible smell arose. I pulled over, turned the car off, and went and checked to see if the fuel cap was on tight (which it was). I got the car started again and babied it back home and called Audi Roadside Assistance (great service, btw).
After getting it towed to the dealership, they said a fuel injector hung open.
How does something like this happen? Is it a fluke thing or is it common with this model? Could it be the result of weather--it's been cold--or maybe my driving style?
Anyone else have this problem or any insights into it?

This is not an uncommon failure mode for injectors and not specific to Audi or petrol engines. Although it should also be noted that these injectors are actually very reliable. Normally much worse on a diesel engine than petrol engines as far as damage is concerned. I have recently finished a investigation into a fire caused by a injector failure on a 16 cyl multiple turbo diesel engine which caused a turbo to fail and the positive pressure in the charge air manifold from the other 3 turbos with the oil from the failed turbo acted like a flame thrower.
