Heavy Thud Under Car When Shifting? Please Help
I bought my 2009 Audi A4 (manual transmission) about 3 months ago off CarMax and up until now have had no problems. About a week ago I noticed a loud thud coming from under the mid-front of the car when I shift (mainly from 1-3). It feels like the whole transmission is moving forward with the momentum between shifts, if I drive careful you can't notice it but something is definitely not right. I jacked it up over the weekend to check the transmission mount and everything looked solid, nothing was loose. Before I take it to a mechanic and spend my life's savings I wanted to see if anyone has had the same problem and or a solution. Thanks.

Check your motor mounts, the left side one you can usually see OK. The right side one reach down beside the turbo and lift the fabric heat shield. Its easy to tell if they are bad, the rubber will be ripped up. From the bottom you can look where the mounts are and see if there is any purple/black stains or fluid on the chassis.

I did a quick check on the motor mounts and the right one feels sunk in and torn, in addition to some staining on the cross member from what I believe to be oil that leaked from inside the mount. I am pretty sure this is the answer to my problem. Does anyone know where I can order motor mounts?

I sent you a PM with a link for a DIY I wrote for another website on changing the mount. The engine mounts come as a set. Both mounts are identical. Audi of Alexandria VA use to have a good website for ordering. They were the cheapest I found at $431. The Part Number is 8R0-198-381-B. They list at $621 and that is the price I found everywhere else. Their phone is 703-739-7490.
I broke a right side as well, not sure if the heat from the turbo compromises its life. I felt a thud when coming off throttle.
The engine rotation pulls down on that side during acceleration and loads the mount, when you letoff throttle the driveline braking effect lifts the engine on the right side and my motor was hitting a support brace.

I placed the jack on the flange where the oil pan meets the engine block. I used a scrap of 2x4 between the jack and the flange so the jack stayed away from the pan. I only did the right side, Not sure when jacking the left if the same spot will work. I highly recommend having a spotter look from above while jacking to verify nothing is getting wedged or pulled. Luckily the motor has a lot of clearance. You will need to lift about 2" or more to get clearance to wiggle the new mount in place. Again 2 people would have been nice, one in the wheel well to help align and one on the jack or under the car to wiggle. It can be done alone.
