Here's a comparison of the engine position of the B8 and my B5....
Here's my B5 engine; 12" behind the front bumper:

And here's the new B8 engine:

Wow, the B8 engine sure does seem farther back. But I know the real measure of the improvement is how far the front of the engine is from the front axel, but I thought this was an easy comparison to do.

I got to peek into an S5's engine bay in Berlin...
Granted it's a larger engine, the engine didn't seem to be "behind" the axle at all. A good portion of the engine was further back of the front wheels, but it wasn't รก la other front-mid engine cars. There's definitely a pronounced difference, though.
