Default Is this normal? (bumpy paint)

Hi, first post. We just bought 2010 A4 yesterday.

No actual photo as my fiance took the car to work, but please see the attached photo,

Where I have circled in red (both sides,) the paint job is not smooth. It's bumbpy, somewhat like tiny bubbled protections. I asked the dealer and they said it's to protect the rock chips.

Is it normal? This is our first Audi and never seen on any of other cars we have owned. (May be we never paid attention. hehe)

Any words would be appreciated.

I didn't notice this on my previous A4's, but my S4 has it. I had assumed it was some form of chip/corrosion protection so I'm glad to hear it confirmed.

I think normal. There was another post about this a while back, if I remember correctly, echoing your dealer's information.

Totally normal. I've had my car for over a year and 3 months. I don't have any paint chips or scratches in that area, so your dealership may be correct.

Ah ha.. No worries then. Thanks for the replies.

I didn't know what that thing was called, so couldn't search for it. Sorry if it was a repost.

Also, in some areas of the bumpy paint area, there is a little groove. That is for you to place the jack if you need to change a tire.

Default Gravel Guard

It's normal, as your dealer said, to protect from rock chips. Some manufacturer's have been using it for quite a while now. You can even buy it yourself for restoration work as "Gravel Guard." The product is black and then painted over with your final colour.

Harold.

Ah. Good to know. I've had my A4 for a year now and always wondered about that, just never got around to asking. I don't have any rock chips in that area as well.

Oh. I thought this thread would be about orange-peel ...

Sounds like everyone answered your question. My friends new Jetta has the same treatment.
